Uganda 2011: Mao & Otunnu pittyful flops!

Olara Otunnu

Mao billed as Uganda's "Obama", the man who would woe Uganda's largely youthful electorate and Otunnu the blast from the past, the man with weights of diplomatic experience on his side who was seen as the shot in the arm that the Uganda' Peoples Congress so badly needed to keep afloat! These two candidates for Uganda's presidency were supposed to give the traditional favourites, Dr Besigye and incumbent Mr Museveni a run for their money and make the 2011 polls the most exciting yet!
However after 106 days of nationwide campaigns these two fellas have nothing to show for their troubles except a disgraceful 0% a piece in the recent opinion polls! All that is now left is official documentation of their total waste of tax payers monies and time in just under four days when the polls are held!

The question is what happened? How did they manage to turn such promise into nothing and absurdity? The answer lies in their respective strategies!
Otunnu for one got it all wrong and let his ego get the better of his judgement. After having initially sided with the Inter Party coalition, he jumped ship less than a month to the start of election season deciding to construct nothing disagreements with the other members on realising that he stood a zero chance of winning the primaries!
His methodology during the campaigns also come into question! The man failed to connect with the troubles and needs of the ordinary Ugandan a fact reflected in the almost obscure crowds that he pulled! Apart from English Otunnu could not speak in any other language (even in his own home district) in a multi-lingual nation with so many ethinicites, something that further stretched the divide between him and the electorate!
You could also point out to the fact that the man had not been in the country for over 20 years or so and was thus grossly out of touch with the developments in the country!

Step up Norbert Mao, the man with messianic views for his country! After Mao won the primaries of the Democratic Party and with it the sole right to represent it as the official flag bearer in the polls, cracks in the party's ranks started to show! The man was fought so much by his own 'people' that court battles and seccesations were the order of the day! Rival parties from his own sprung up and challenged his leadership! It is no wonder that the man had little if any support as he traversed the country under the unrelenting heat of the sun in search for support! His morale was shattered and he never came back to his old charismatic self, completely loosing touch the whole nine yards! His rhetoric during the campaigns was littered with nothing but banalities as his campaign slowly ground to a halt and he instead sought to engage himself in meagre tuff battles with party rival, Betty Namboze!
Soon like Otunnu, he could not even make press worthy news and was lost together with his tattered vision into the wind leaving only Dr Kizza Besigye and Gen Kaguta Museveni to battle for the prize!

Norbert Mao

I do not think that these two will have any more shots at presidency, rather I only recommend that while they reaquaint themselves on the nuts and bolts of what it takes, they could seek solace in 'smaller' offices of public service at least until their trousers are pressed!

  1. Well as much as i agre with you on this both this guys have rights to contest my concern was particularly on Mao who instead of fighting his own battles to show the electorate that he is mature enough to lead this country,he concentrated on abusing Our president Kizza Besigye who with his maturity, briliancy ,wise understanding never answered him even on a single day .this put me off from even from taking Mao seriously i belive he was alone and no advicers
with Olara otunnu he did not have big issues of modern development but kept telling us about the past not bad but as an exposed canditate ,well travelled give us better ideas sir
